Family Album is a 2023 Ukrainian documentary film directed by Marina Tkachuk, created in partnership with the Holodomor Museum. British photographer Samara Pierce discovered an extraordinary story about her family ten years ago. Her great-grandfather, Alexander Wienerberger, an Austrian citizen, became a witness to the Holodomor in Ukraine in 1932–1933.
Using his camera, he captured historic photographs of famine-stricken Kharkiv and managed to smuggle them out to Austria as diplomatic mail. These images later made him the principal photographic witness of the Holodomor in Ukraine.
